Honoured as one of Canada’s most outstanding National Team Coaches, Olympic medal-winning coach Tanya Dubnicoff began as a World Class athlete herself. As a sprint cyclist, Tanya represented Canada at 3 Olympic games, won a World Championship title and held the world record in her event. After Tanya’s retirement as an athlete in 2000, her passion for the sport led her to coaching, where she shared her knowledge and experience with developing athletes by providing them with the tools required to attain success. Tanya spent the next 13 years building thriving cycling programs in Canada and the United States.
Tanya’s versatility as a coach has seen her connect with varying age groups and cycling disciplines employing the skills from her decade as the only female coach at the international level at the time. She has helped athletes achieve success across the spectrum of abilities guiding them to National and World Championships, two Olympic Games where in 2012, Tanya led her program to win a bronze medal in Women’s Team Pursuit for Team Canada at the London Olympics.
Since 2016 Tanya has worked with the Canadian Sports Institute -Calgary cycling program as the Development cycling lead. During her tenure Tanya focussed on creating the DEVO program where athletes aged ten to thirteen years participated in three cycling disciplines - mountain bike, track and cyclocross – year round. Each eight week session saw athletes’ self-confidence soar as they increased their skills through strength and conditioning, bike handling, pedalling efficiency in a safe and fun environment. Tanya led riders to become National Champions in Junior and Elite categories on the track and attaining podium performances in U23 on the road.

‘Identify what makes you special and how to lead with purpose;champion your own mission; learn to ask more of yourself and go deeper than before; challenge the fear to create a new possibility’ are some of Tanya’s guiding statements with the end result of breakthrough performances and both internal and external success.
Working with Tanya
I wouldn’t be where I am today without Tanya’s coaching and guidance. When I first began riding on the track I had never owned a bike nor ridden one aside from leisurely rides as a kid. I put all of my trust into Tanya’s coaching and programming she designed for me over the last 2 years and trusted in the process every step of the way. A combination of her experience as a world-class athlete and coaching at all levels from international to development coaching, I knew that I was in the right hands.
In 2019 did achieve a personal best in the 500 meter TT winning a bronze medal and the highlight of the event was winning a gold medal in the team sprint as the starter. I was so proud to put on the National Champion’s Jersey and share these moments with Coach Tanya. Following the Canadian Track Championships I earned a spot on the national team after only being on a bike for nearly two years. My progression in track cycling is because of Tanya’s expertise, patience and support. Tanya leads with a positive style of coaching and her organization in program planning, goal setting and balance between training and everyday life are all great contributing factors that make her a great coach.
